CANTOS DE LA TIERRA CANTOS DE MISTERIO CANTOS DE EROS

Song is perhaps the primary musical expression of humans in all cultures and even in the animal realm. Throughout history extremely varied forms of song have been developed. This project will focus in the western tradition of concert or art song, tracing an unprecedented genealogy across nine centuries and more than 15 languages, revealing the richness of this tradition, in a moment where commercial pop song conquers our sound landscape worldwide with increasingly standardised expressions.

The project traces an unprecedented approach to the repertoire of Art Song, from ancient music to contemporary creation, from all european languages and countries, and beyond in the influence in North and South America and other parts of the world. A pioneering recording project dedicated to Art Song by leading specialist soprano Ana Higueras and pianist, composer and producer Jaime del Val. An unprecedented anthology of art song encompassing music from the 13th to the 21st Centuries, in 15 languajes, from Spain, Latinamerica, Germany, France, Italy, England, Russia, Galicia, Cataluña, Basque Land, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Northamerica. The project includes some of the most celebrated pieces of the art song repertoire together with yet unpublished or unrecorded works and new creations that open the expressive potentials of song to new horizons.

Dedicated to the memory of my grandparens,
Ana Maria Rodríguez Aragón and Jacinto Higueras Cátedra,
who nurtured this project with their passion, generosity and excitement
until their death in December 2009.

Ana Higueras and Jaime del Val perform an unprecedented collection of Spanish art song ranging from the middle ages to the present. This anthology in 4 CDs presents 88 vocal works starting in the Cantigas of Alfonso X the Wise in the 13th Century and ending in contemporary creation, a genealogy of art song in the voice of one the greates experts from the last 50 years in the spanish vocal repertoire.

The collection includes numerous premiere recordings of contemporary as well as older works, amongst which the complete triptics by C. Bernaola, Tomás Marco and José Luis Turina, as well as two songs by Consuelo Diez, and a world premiere of J. del Val: Borde de la Luz. We also offer remiere recordings of worls by Román Alís, Luis de Pablo, Cristóbal Halffter, Oscar Esplá, Ernersto Halffter, Fernando Obradors, Luis Misón and of one of the 13th Century Cantigas in the solo voice format.

The project was conceived by Ana Higueras, one of the greatest experts in Spanish voal repertoire and one of the most brilliant spanish sopranos of the last 50 years, together with her son, the multidisiplinary artist, composer, pianist and theorist Jaime del Val, who is also producer of the project, recorded in the Studios of Higueras Arte with the support of the Region of Madrid.

An innovative project with exclusive online distribution, that strives for a both greater and more democratic dissemination, easily reachable, less expensive, and with greater production and distribution alternatives.

The project has been recorded and edited using specialised techniques that strive to produce and intimate sense of proximity and a clean transparent sound.

The project will be further developed in 2010 and 2011 with another 8 CDs of German, French, Italian, English, Russian, Iberoamerican and Northamerican song, as well as successive CDs that will complete and extend the recordings of Spanish song presented here.

A genealogy of art song is a genealogy of the subject. Little attention has been paid by the academic writing and critical theory to the relevance of song for the production of subjectivity, both in the art song and, in the popular-commercial and in the folklore domains. We hope herewith to bring further critical insight into the genealogy of song understood as genealogy of a humanist subject that takes shape in the Renaissance, and which is challenged and redefined by contemporary experimantation towards what we could call posthuman song.
